Location

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is located at the Dam Square in Amsterdam,
capital of The Netherlands.

This square really is the city's heart. There are a few other important sites of
interests on the Dam:

- Monument in honour of Dutch victims of War;
- Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), ...

Some building history

The Royal Palace of Amsterdam has a remarkable history. It first was built
as the Town Hall of the City of Amsterdam. This was opened on 29 July 1655
by Cornelis de Graeff, the mayor of Amsterdam.

The main architect was Jacob van Campen. He got his inspiration from the
Town Hall of Antwerp in Belgium.

Some royal history

In 1806, Louis Napoleon, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte became King Louis I
of Holland. He moved to Amsterdam and converted the Town Hall into a royal
palace for himself.

On 2 July 1810 King Louis I of Holland abdicated in favour of his son,
Napoleon Louis Bonaparte. However France annexed the Netherlands and the
royal Palace of Amsterdam became home to the French governor:
Charles François Lebrun.

After the defeat of Napoleon (1815),  Prince William VI of Orange became
King William I of the Netherlands and Amsterdam was made the official
capital of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (containted the countries:
Belgium and the Netherlands).
