18 December 1833 National Anthem of the Russian Empire God Save the Tsar

The National Anthem of the Russian Empire was first performed on
18 December 1833.

In 1833, Tsar Nicholas I ruled Russia.  He was the emperor from
1825 till 1855.

In 1833, a competition was held to find a proper song to perform for the Tsar.
Finally a song was chosen. It was: God Save the Tsar.

The composer became Alexei Lvov (since 1828 the aide-de-camp of Tsar
Nicholas I).

The lyrics were written by the court poet Vasily Zhukovsky.

This anthem lasted till the Russian Revolution in 1917, after the
'Workers Marseillaise' was adopted as new anthem.
